In 2025, Ukraine witnessed six tragic incidents involving children due to dangerous activities known as "train surfing".
This was reported by Vitaliy Romanov, the deputy head of Ukraine's juvenile police, during a segment on "Public TV".
Train surfing refers to a risky pastime where teenagers climb onto train cars to capture videos or take photos. Another variant of this activity includes hanging onto the outside of moving trains.
"The consequences of train surfing can be lethal, which is why we continuously emphasize the need for preventive measures against such incidents," Romanov stated.
He also recounted two unfortunate events that occurred in Volyn on the same day - April 20. One incident involved a 16-year-old boy who climbed onto a train car and got injured.
Hours later, a 13-year-old boy attempted to film a video from the roof of a train car and was electrocuted.
"In this case, the child suffered 80% burns, and his condition is extremely critical; doctors are fighting for his life," Romanov noted.
He added that train surfing is not only prevalent in Ukraine but also in other countries. Often, the victims are children from well-off families who have not previously come to the attention of law enforcement.
It is worth mentioning that on March 12, a 12-year-old boy in Kyiv climbed onto an electric train car and suffered severe burns due to electrocution. Doctors fought for five days to save his life, but unfortunately, he passed away.
