In Odesa, the third and final stage of the collector reconstruction in Arcadia, which began in 2017, is ongoing.
This phase involves both surface and underwater work to ensure the stable operation of drainage systems that have been in a critical state for decades.
Cleaning of the old drainage pipe, which has been in a critical condition, is underway on the section leading to the sea. Water has been flowing over the ground as the pipe's foundation had rotted. According to the project, a new polyethylene pipe will be inserted into the old 2-meter diameter pipe, resistant to aggressive environments. The space between the pipes will be filled with concrete to strengthen the structure.
The next step will be laying the pipe in the marine section. Divers will cut technological hatches and install the new pipe using a floating barge with a crane.
“The work in Arcadia is the final active phase of a multi-year project aimed at ensuring quality drainage and comfort for Odesa's residents and visitors,” said Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
After the work is completed, the area will be cleared of construction debris. Experts predict that the updated beach will be able to accommodate visitors comfortably next year.
Coastal Reinforcement and Future Promenade
Simultaneously, coastal reinforcement is underway along the shoreline from Arcadia to Novoberehova Street to protect the shore from the destructive effects of waves during storms.
Currently, old landslide prevention elements are being dismantled, piles are being driven, and preparations for concreting are being made, along with the production of reinforced concrete products. These elements will not only serve a technical function but also form a base for the beautification of the area.
“In the future, a modern promenade with pedestrian zones, ramps, and bike paths will be established here, along with the restoration of the 'Health Route' in an improved form,” added Hennadiy Trukhanov.
