Last week, health institutions in Odesa organized an event focused on the prevention and early detection of diabetes for adults and children.

This initiative was supported by the Department of Health of the Odesa City Council and the Odesa City Health Center.

During the event, doctors offered free blood glucose level checks, blood pressure measurements, height and weight assessments, as well as calculations of body mass index, providing consultations and electronic referrals for further testing.

Informational sessions were also held with visitors regarding diabetes prevention, risk factors for type II diabetes, healthy lifestyle practices, nutrition, and physical activity.

A total of 3130 Odesa residents participated, including 2280 adults and 850 children.

Among the adults, 296 cases of high blood pressure and 161 cases of elevated blood glucose were identified. Additionally, 467 patients were found to have a high body mass index, and 227 were referred for further testing.

In children, 10 cases of high blood pressure and 13 cases of elevated glucose levels were detected. 91 children had a body mass index above normal, and 76 were referred for cholesterol level tests.

Overall, doctors conducted 2986 consultations, including 706 for children.

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by persistent high blood glucose levels, leading to severe complications such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney damage, and vision problems.

Symptoms include thirst, constant hunger, frequent urination, weight changes, fatigue, and vision issues.

Type I is insulin-dependent, typically occurring in younger individuals. Type II is related to insulin resistance and usually develops gradually, often without symptoms. Risk factors can be mitigated through a healthy lifestyle.

Risk factors for Type II include obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, stress, various illnesses, and age.

Prevention strategies: maintain a healthy weight, engage in physical activity, eat a balanced diet, quit smoking, and regularly monitor blood glucose levels.
