This weekend, Odessa became the venue for a remarkable sporting event — the Championship of Ukraine in marine sports, featuring both men and women competing in rowing on yachts.
The event gathered an impressive number of participants: 32 teams from various regions of the country, including veterans and armed forces personnel. For the first time in history, two teams of children with developmental disabilities participated, marking a significant step towards inclusivity.
Odessa's mayor, Gennady Trukhanov, opened the championship with a heartfelt speech, emphasizing the importance of this event not just for sports but for society as a whole.
«This is more than just a competition. You have already triumphed over pain and loss, and today, with smiles on your faces, you show everyone that life goes on,» he addressed the veterans.
Gennady Trukhanov also stated that Odessa is a place where everyone can find support and opportunities for recovery.
He announced the participation of the Odessa veterans' team in the legendary Venice Regatta, which has been held for over 700 years. A boat flying the Ukrainian flag will symbolize the strength and dignity of our nation on the international stage.
Dmitry Stepnov, the head of the Ukrainian Marine Sports Federation, expressed appreciation for the organization and significance of the championship:
«This is not just rehabilitation for veterans, but rehabilitation for our society. Veterans set an example for the youth, and we already have our first coaches among them. What is happening in Odessa is a dream come true,» he noted.
During the event, Mayor Gennady Trukhanov and Vitaly Holodok, head of the Odessa branch of the federation, were awarded certificates of appreciation for their significant contributions to the development of adaptive rowing among military personnel.
The championship was organized with the support of the NGO «Barrier-Free».
