In Odesa, an innovative program for vaccinating children against the human papillomavirus is being carried out using funds from the city budget. This vaccination plays a crucial role in preventing various cancers and other diseases in adulthood.

The HPV vaccine is most effective for children aged 9 to 14, prior to the onset of sexual activity. During a vaccination conference, Levon Nikoghosyan, the Director of the Odesa City Health Department, stated that as of October 2023, 1590 children have been vaccinated, with 858 completing the vaccination schedule with two doses. By the end of the year, an additional 1500 vaccinations are planned.

Currently, Odesa is the only city in Ukraine where both girls and boys are vaccinated against the human papillomavirus free of charge.

“Vaccination is one of humanity's greatest inventions that has saved countless lives. I urge all parents to take their children's health seriously and ensure they receive all necessary vaccinations on time,” emphasized Levon Nikoghosyan.

A specialized vaccination school took place on November 6, 2024, supported by the Odesa City Health Department and the Odesa Regional Family Medicine Association. Pediatricians, family doctors, therapists, immunologists, allergists, infectious disease specialists, and other professionals participated in the event.

Medical experts highlighted the importance of timely vaccinations for children to prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases and maintain a favorable epidemiological situation in Odesa and Ukraine as a whole.

Discussions also included additional vaccinations not included in the National Immunization Schedule but recommended, such as those for pneumococcal infection. Special attention was given to effective communication between healthcare professionals and parents, addressing common questions related to vaccination.
