The Odessa City Health Department has initiated a new project titled «Odessa Monitors Healthy Weight».
The primary aim of the initiative is to reduce obesity rates among both adults and children, prevent related diseases, and improve the quality and longevity of life for the residents of Odessa.
«Addressing excess weight is a strategic priority that many countries have recognized. Less than half of Ukrainians maintain a healthy weight, with many suffering from excess weight. Weight management and a conscious approach to nutrition and lifestyle are vital for health and longevity», — stated Levon Nikoghosyan, Director of the City Health Department.
The project plans to train over 350 family doctors and pediatricians, along with primary care nurses, on issues related to obesity, its treatment, and prevention.
Leading experts from the Department of Family Medicine at Odessa National Medical University and the Odessa Region Family Medicine Association will conduct the training.
The training program will cover a wide range of topics, including consulting adults and children, proper nutrition, feeding practices, and ensuring control over dietary habits, physical activity, and sleep patterns. Screening for excessive body mass and associated diseases will also be implemented.
The first session of the project commenced on March 4, 2025, at the Primary Health Care Center No. 4. The initial group consists of 15 doctors and 15 family nurses who will participate in a two-day professional school focusing on obesity and motivational interviewing with patients.
«Obesity is not just an aesthetic concern; it is a complex chronic disease. For years, individuals may experience no symptoms, but gradually, issues like high blood pressure, fat accumulation in the liver, and increased blood sugar can arise, leading to serious conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular complications», — emphasized Valentyna Velychko, Director of the Children's Consultative and Diagnostic Center.
Doctors offer simple advice that can save lives:
1. When thirsty, drink plain water. Avoid sugary drinks between meals.
2. Strive to include at least half a kilogram of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.
3. Dedicate one hour each day to increase your physical activity, such as brisk walking or exercises.
