On March 21, people in Ukraine and around the globe observe a significant day dedicated to individuals with Down syndrome.

In the city of Odessa, there are over 150 individuals living with this genetic condition.  To enhance societal awareness and combat stereotypes, a photo exhibition featuring local families, including those with children who have this condition, has been organized at the city’s Integrated Social Services Center.

The event was opened by Olena Kytainska, the Director of the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the Odessa City Council, who wished everyone present peace, harmony, and patience.

Lidia Ostrohladova, a mother of two children with Down syndrome, expressed her gratitude for the attention and assistance regarding issues faced by individuals with disabilities.

Representatives from community organizations such as “The Future Guarantee,” “Special Children,” and “Healthy Society” also participated in the event.

At the end of the meeting, officials from the Labor and Social Policy Department presented special guests with gifts.

Additionally, employees from the Odessa social protection district offices joined the worldwide flash mob “Colorful Socks.” To show support for individuals with Down syndrome, they attached an odd number of colorful socks to their outerwear as a symbol of the extra chromosome.
