A driver's license is not just a privilege but also a responsibility that opens up new opportunities. Many people associate the ability to drive with freedom and mobility.
In Ukraine, there is no upper age limit for obtaining a driver's license, allowing older individuals to become drivers, provided they have no medical contraindications. However, there are clear minimum age thresholds for different vehicle categories.
According to Ukrainian legislation, training and obtaining a driver's license is possible from the age of 16 for categories A and A1 (motorcycles and mopeds). For trucks and trolleybuses, the age limits are 19 and 21 years respectively.
As per the Law of Ukraine on Road Traffic, the right to operate vehicles is granted to individuals who have reached:
16 years – for categories A1, A;
18 years – for categories B1, B, C1, C;
19 years – for categories BE, C1E, CE;
21 years – for categories D1, D, D1E, DE, T.
How to obtain a driver's license?
To become a driver, one must learn the traffic rules according to a standard training program. This can be done independently or through accredited driving schools. After that, the theoretical exam must be passed at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Upon successful completion of the test, the candidate undergoes practical training at the driving school and takes the internal practical exam.
For exams at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a set of documents must be prepared:
a passport with registration or ID card;
a medical certificate confirming fitness to drive;
the taxpayer registration number;
an existing driver's license (if applicable).
Please note that the fee for the theoretical exam is 250 UAH, while the practical exam costs 420 UAH.
To access services in territorial units, prior registration in the E-Record system or at a self-service terminal is required. Questions regarding services can be directed to (044) 290-19-88 or through the Ministry's social media pages.
