Last weekend, municipal workers found broken glass in the sarcophagus above the ancient Greek exhibition on Primorsky Boulevard in Odessa.
The Vice Mayor of Odessa, Anna Poznyakova, believes this is likely the work of vandals.
«It appears that someone decided to “have some fun” and left us shards of triplex glass, scratched stainless steel, and a bill for expensive repairs», – she wrote on her Facebook page.
Currently, municipal workers have covered the dome with plastic, but repairing the broken glass will take a long time since the sarcophagus is made from specially ordered thick glass (1 cm). It needs to be specially tempered and meet many other requirements.
“At a time when every penny goes to support the front and critical infrastructure, unnecessary expenses due to someone’s irresponsibility are a luxury the city cannot afford. Primorsky is a symbol of Odessa, a place of strength for residents and visitors. Let’s not destroy what we create together”, – noted Anna Poznyakova.
It is worth mentioning that under the dome on Primorsky Boulevard, there are remnants of a Greek settlement from the 6th-5th centuries BC, which were excavated by archaeologists in 2008 and arranged as a museum exhibition.
The viewing pyramid of the mini-museum has been a target of vandalism multiple times: the last such incident occurred in the winter of 2016. Moreover, from time to time, some of our fellow citizens fill the exhibits of the mini-museum with scraps of paper and other trash.
