In the national park «Tuzly Limans» in the Odesa region, an unusual phenomenon has been observed – the water in Magalevsky Liman has changed to a red hue due to the blooming of algae.

Ecologist Ivan Rusev reported this.

He explained that after the natural closure of the channel over a 2 km sand spit, due to intense evaporation, the liman has nearly dried up. Salt formation is actively occurring within its area.

In recent days, the water ecosystem of the liman has been gradually taking on a reddish color. The peak of this phenomenon is expected by mid-September, making the liman resemble a landscape from a distant planet. This color serves as an indicator of the massive blooming of the green microalgae Dunaliella Salina during periods of high temperature and salinity, – Rusev noted.

Rusev added that Magalevsky Liman is the sixth of 13 shallow limans that are actively drying up, and salt will be formed there. Despite this trend, the expanses of the other 7 limans remain large and provide food for birds and hydrobionts.
