With the support of the State Agency for Restoration and Development of Infrastructure, an important meeting took place in the Kyiv office of the Ministry of Community Development, featuring Odessa Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov and his deputy Hanna Pozdnyakova, alongside representatives from the South Korean corporation POSCO E&C, a global leader in infrastructure construction.
The corporation has already built over 30 waste incineration plants in various countries. According to Hanna Pozdnyakova, the most valuable experience is the construction of such a plant in Warsaw, which she visited during a business trip in March. It was built in accordance with European legislation and EU environmental standards, which Ukraine is now integrating into its national legislation. The comprehensive waste management approach implemented in Warsaw aligns with the concept that Odessa is currently studying.
This meeting marked the first dialogue with POSCO E&C representatives regarding the potential construction of an incineration plant in Odessa.
“We have close ties with Ukraine and have already completed projects in the metallurgy and agro-industrial sectors, particularly in Mykolaiv region, and we hope for further active cooperation,” said Kim Yong Hyun, the vice president of the South Korean corporation.
The infrastructure project has already been approved by the relevant ministry and included in the city's heat supply scheme. Following the negotiations, the parties agreed to work on the organizational and technical issues necessary for project implementation.
“We have state support and all the prerequisites for the realization of this important project for Odessa. I hope we can start it as soon as possible. Firstly, it’s an ecological initiative, and secondly, it involves the construction of thermal and electrical energy generation facilities — critically needed for our city,” said Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov.
