On June 21, an important meeting took place in Odesa between Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov and Haolian Xu, the UN Deputy Secretary-General and Acting Administrator of UNDP.
During the visit, the international delegation and representatives of Ukrainian ministries assessed the implementation of the program «Green Energy Recovery», which is being rolled out in cooperation with UNDP, supported by Sweden, Norway, and Japan.
The main goal of the initiative is to enhance Odesa's energy security, which faces regular attacks from the aggressor, and to provide critical infrastructure with autonomous heat and electricity sources.
«We have achieved significant results in a short time, realizing what seems impossible in wartime. Four out of nine planned cogeneration stations have already been installed. This is not just new equipment — it symbolizes our confidence in resilience, victory, and warmth in our homes», — said Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov.
This project is a vivid example of effective cooperation between local authorities and the international community to meet the vital needs of the community and ensure sustainable development in Odesa.
«This collaboration demonstrates how international support helps Ukraine endure. It is a great honor for us to be here and to promote the city's energy independence», — emphasized Haolian Xu.
«The project is an important part of the state program for decentralizing energy supply», — added Deputy Minister for Community and Territorial Development Kostyantyn Kovalchuk.
Currently, four cogeneration units with a capacity of 3.3 MW each are operational in Odesa. Two more are expected soon, with the full completion of the project — nine units totaling 29.7 MW — planned by the end of the year. This will ensure reliable autonomous heat and electricity supply for over 900,000 Odesa residents, even in the event of a complete power outage in the city.
