The police have apprehended a resident of Podilskyi District for illegally seizing a vehicle. The suspect stole the car to avoid walking home. He has been charged and a preventive measure has been imposed. He faces imprisonment along with asset confiscation.
Authorities reported that the incident took place in a village within the Zelengir community. A local resident informed the police that someone had stolen his VAZ car during the night.
"The vehicle was located by police on the outskirts of the village, not far from the crime scene, and during initial investigative measures that same day, the suspect was swiftly identified and arrested at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from Baltska community, previously convicted for property crimes and still under sentence", - the report stated.
The suspect explained to the police that upon seeing an unlocked car on someone else's property, he decided to drive it home. He managed to start the engine by connecting the ignition wires, but did not get far as the vehicle broke down, leaving it on the outskirts of the settlement before fleeing the scene.
"We detained the suspect in accordance with procedural law. We have gathered enough evidence and charged him with a criminal offense under part 2 of article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This involves illegal seizure of a vehicle, committed repeatedly, punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years with or without asset confiscation. At our request, the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention. We also appointed a product examination to determine the car's value and the amount of damages incurred by the victim", - explained Oleg Sytnyk, head of Police Department No. 1 of Podilskyi District.
