A loud controversy has erupted in Odesa regarding the construction of the M1 Club Apartments near the Alley of Glory. The high-rise has already obstructed part of the sea view, and now the perspective from the Unknown Sailor monument is nearly completely blocked. Relevant photos and videos are widely shared on social media. Locals are outraged: "They've stolen our view, destroyed the atmosphere, distorted one of the city's most symbolic places."
According to official documents, the construction was carried out as a "reconstruction of non-residential premises into a water sports rehabilitation center," but in reality, a multi-story residential building is being erected. The permit was issued by the Odesa City Council's Department of Architectural and Construction Control.
What are the demands of the residents, and how is the government responding? The public organization "Common Goal" demands:
- to immediately halt construction;
- to conduct an architectural examination of the site;
- to verify the legality of the permits;
- to hold officials and the developer accountable.
The mayor of Odesa, Hennadiy Trukhanov, confirmed that the construction is illegal and violates the architectural appearance of the city. According to him, the city authorities granted permission for an eight-story building, but the developer exceeded these parameters.
"We see how some companies try to bypass the rules by altering permits and using legal loopholes, which harms our infrastructure and vision of the city's development," he wrote on Telegram.
Trukhanov promised that if the developer does not rectify the violations and revert to the original agreements, a decision on forced demolition will be made.
He also reminded about other controversial constructions near the Art Museum and in Starobazar Square, assuring that new projects will no longer be approved without public discussion.
