As October begins, specialists from the Municipal Enterprise «Service Center» have started preparing the city fountains for winter, ensuring they can resume operation in the spring.

The winterization of fountains is a complex process. To ensure the fountains survive the cold, the specialists must blow out the water supply systems, dismantle the nozzles, as well as the electrical and pumping equipment. After dismantling, the equipment is inspected, and repairs are made if necessary.

This year, the first fountain to be shut down was located at the Railway Station Square. Following this, the fountains «Waterfall» on Kosivska Street and «Mermaid» in Victory Park are scheduled for winterization.

Other fountains located in city parks will cease operation by mid-October, while those in the central part of Odessa will be winterized last. Thus, all city fountains are expected to be winterized by the beginning of November.

Additionally, in recent years, the Municipal Enterprise «Service Center» has been practicing complete sealing of some fountain basins, particularly those in the City Garden, Shevchenko Park, and the Cosmonauts Square. Since the onset of the war, four fountains located in the UNESCO zone have been fully winterized: the Memorial Fountain for the victims of German-Romanian fascists, the fountain «Petya and Gavrik», the fountain «Children and the Frog», and the spring-fountain «Source».

The process of reopening the fountains will commence in the spring. Typically, the first fountains are turned on in the city center by April 1, with the rest following in April.

The Municipal Enterprise «Service Center» manages 27 city fountains. In 2024, 17 fountains were reopened. All of them are outdoors, so weather conditions are the main factor determining their operational period.
Fifteen employees of the Municipal Enterprise «Service Center» ensure the proper functioning of these fountains.
Throughout the spring-summer-autumn period, specialists perform maintenance on the fountains: cleaning the basins and collecting debris, cleaning external filters and nozzles, rinsing sand filters, and refilling water to the required level.
In addition to scheduled maintenance, city fountains are occasionally victims of vandalism, requiring unscheduled repairs.
The fountain on Krymsky Boulevard has consistently experienced the highest number of vandalism incidents, with many teenagers ignoring numerous signs and damaging the equipment.
All restoration work on the fountains and the elimination of various damages is undertaken by specialists from the Municipal Enterprise «Service Center», who continue their work despite the challenges of wartime.
