In Ukraine, there is an increasing number of individuals in wheelchairs due to the impacts of war. This situation highlights the urgent need to create a comfortable space for everyone, regardless of their physical capabilities.
Odesa has emerged as a leader in inclusivity, with Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov declaring 2025 as the Year of Barrier-Free Environment. This requires comprehensive changes across all sectors of life.
The driving force behind these changes is the Barrier-Free Council, established last year, which unites representatives from various organizations to develop a barrier-free space.
According to Hennadiy Trukhanov, barrier-free living is not just about accessibility but is a philosophy that ensures equality for all city residents.
The Council is working on a Barrier-Free Strategy for 2025-2026, which outlines key priorities. Regular inspections of infrastructure are conducted with input from veterans and people with disabilities.
“Our priorities are shaped by people with disabilities since they best understand their own needs,” emphasizes Oleksiy Morozov, Deputy Head of the Council.
The main goal of the Council is to unite efforts from various sectors to address the issue of barrier-free living as a key contemporary challenge.
