In Odesa, doctors performed an extraordinary surgery on an eight-month-old boy. A special electrode was implanted in the child's heart to assist the muscle in contracting correctly.
Details of the operation and the child's condition are reported by "Suspilne". Currently, Gleb is in the intensive care unit.
The parents learned about the heart defect after the baby was born, which was a challenging time for them due to significant risks.
Additional specialists were involved in the combined surgery. Using ultrasound equipment, pediatric cardiac surgeons helped locate a very thin subclavian vein.
"We implanted the electrode not in the muscle but in the conduction system of the heart. According to our research, this is the first case documented in literature for such young children. We targeted the conduction system, particularly the left bundle, and achieved excellent electrophysiological and mechanical results. First, we ensured the electrical impulse, and subsequently, the heart contraction was facilitated," said surgeon Yuriy Karpenko.
This operation became unique as it was the first surgical intervention of its kind performed on a child under one year of age. This sparked international interest, leading to invitations for Ukrainian doctors to present this case at the University of Chicago in leading medical publications.
"Like everyone else, we use artificial intelligence, Google, and other resources. All of this can be verified. That is why there has been such a resonance around this operation. We are very pleased that this was accomplished in our country, in Ukraine, in Odesa, in our hospital," the doctor explained.
The baby is currently in intensive care. The implanted pacemaker will ensure the boy's heart functions for 15 years.
