The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the procedure for establishing a National Register of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), aimed at improving consumer safety.
This announcement was made by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.
The new register is intended to be a single state information system that will allow for the accounting, monitoring, and storage of data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.
The ministry explained that implementing such a register is a necessary step towards ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, enhancing consumer safety, and fulfilling Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU.
Additionally, the resolution harmonizes Ukrainian legislation with EU acts regarding GMO management. Specifically, it aligns with Directive 2001/18/EC concerning the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC regarding the operation of registers for recording information about GMOs.
This will enable the creation of a regulated accounting and monitoring system for GMOs that meets European standards, thereby reducing negative impacts and risks to human health and the environment.
The resolution will take effect in September 2026, simultaneously with the new legislation regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
