On April 26, 2025, at the Odesa National Scientific Library, a lecture-discussion titled “Illuminating the Middle Ages: A Fresh Perspective” took place as part of the educational project Doktrina Solis. The speaker was Vadim Chepizhenko, a candidate of historical sciences and an associate professor at ONU named after I.I. Mechnikov.

The event began with a welcome from project coordinator Olena Konovalенко, who emphasized the importance of exploring cultural perceptions of the Middle Ages.

Vadim Chepizhenko examined numerous myths surrounding this era, particularly the perception of the Middle Ages as a dark and brutal time. He explained that this period was rich in cultural achievements and scientific discoveries.

The lecture opened with a discussion on the image of the Middle Ages, often seen as a time of cultural decline, yet filled with many intriguing ideas and concepts.

The term “Middle Ages” emerged in Italy between the 10th and 16th centuries among historians who sought to revive classical culture. They defined this era as the period between antiquity and their present time. Researchers highlight four main areas in medieval science, including physical-cosmic studies and the teachings about living nature.

The lecture emphasized alchemy as a unique phenomenon of medieval culture and its role in scientific development. Participants discussed how the Middle Ages laid the foundation for the formation of modern European civilization.

The lecturer answered numerous questions from the audience, which consisted of philosophers, cultural scientists, and students interested in new knowledge about this era. The event was broadcasted throughout the country, underscoring its significance for contemporary society.
