In northern Odesa, a striking and rare large night moth, known as Saturnia pyri, has been discovered. This species stands as the largest moth in Europe, boasting a wingspan of up to 15 centimeters.

The State Ecological Inspectorate of the Southwestern District announced this via Telegram. According to their reports, the Saturnia was observed near the village of Bashtankiv in the Podilskyi district.

This moth is notable not only for its size but also for its stunning appearance. Its wings feature distinctive "eyes," which contribute to its nickname, the "peacock eye." By day, the moth hides away, revealing its grandeur only by night.

Key Features of the Rare Moth:

  • Largest moth in Europe
  • Wingspan: up to 15 cm
  • Distinctive "eyes" on the wings
  • Nocturnal lifestyle
  • Warmth-loving species

This warmth-loving species cannot withstand prolonged freezing temperatures. Its emergence in northern Odesa is not only a rare sight but also a significant event for ecologists and nature enthusiasts alike.

Saturnia pyri is listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine as a "vulnerable species." Its populations are primarily maintained through passive protection in reserves and national parks.
