A 20-year-old resident of the Podilskyi district received a court verdict for the cruel treatment of a neighbor's dog, resulting in the animal's death.

This was reported by the press service of the National Police of Ukraine in the Odessa region. A reconciliation agreement was reached between the offender and the victim. The young man will face punishment in the form of restriction of freedom with a probationary period.

In February of this year, a woman from one of the villages of the Ananyiv community reported to the police that an unknown person killed her yard dog on her property at night and threw its body into an abandoned well located by the roadside.

From the crime scene, police seized two bloody and broken kitchen knives, which, along with the animal's body, were sent for forensic examination. According to the expert's conclusion, the dog died from blood loss caused by cut wounds to the head and neck.

The police established that a 20-year-old resident of the same village was involved in the crime. The young man explained that the woman's dog allegedly caused damage to his parents' household. He decided not to contact the police regarding this matter and entered the unguarded area of the woman's property, inflicting injuries on the dog that was tied up with two knives he had brought with him, after which he disposed of the animal in the well.

Investigators charged the suspect under Part 1 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning the cruel treatment of vertebrates that led to the animal's death.

During the pre-trial investigation, the accused admitted his guilt and reached a reconciliation agreement with the dog's owner, which law enforcement sent to court along with the indictment.

The court found the defendant guilty, approved the reconciliation agreement, and imposed a sentence of one year of restriction of freedom with a probation period of one year. During the probationary period, the convicted person must periodically report to the probation authority, notify the specified authority of changes in residence, work, or study, and obtain approval for travel outside Ukraine.
