The Security Service of Ukraine has successfully thwarted another terrorist threat in Odesa, orchestrated by Russian intelligence.
As a result of a special operation, a Russian agent was arrested after being tasked with bombing a member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Investigations revealed that the executor of this mission was a 31-year-old resident of Odesa, recruited through Telegram channels that promised "easy money".
Initially, he was given a so-called "test" task to set fire to a military vehicle. After completing this, the agent received further instructions for organizing an assassination attempt.
He was to retrieve an improvised explosive device (IED) from a previously prepared stash and place it at the location of the military officer.
SBU operatives detected the hostile intentions in advance and meticulously documented the criminal actions of the perpetrator.
According to the investigation, the agent's task was to plant explosives with shrapnel effects in a children's playground in a residential area of Odesa. Subsequently, Russian operatives planned to remotely activate the IED using a mobile phone equipped with the explosives.
SBU operatives apprehended the suspect "red-handed" right after he planted the device at the designated attack site.
The suspect has been charged under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 2 of Article 15, Part 2 of Article 258 (completed attempt to commit a terrorist act by prior conspiracy of a group of individuals);
- Part 2 of Article 28, Part 2 of Article 194 (intentional destruction of property by arson by prior conspiracy of a group of individuals);
- Part 2 of Article 28, Part 1 of Article 114-1 (obstruction of lawful activity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during a special period, committed by prior conspiracy of a group of individuals).
He has been placed in custody without the right to bail.
The operation was carried out by SBU officers in the Odesa region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor's office.
