In the Odesa region, law enforcement officers arrested the head of a military hospital department for corruption. The medical professional demanded 2000 dollars from a soldier in exchange for documents certifying limited fitness for service. He faces a prison sentence of up to ten years with asset confiscation.
The illegal activities were uncovered and halted by investigators from the National Police's Main Directorate in the Odesa region in collaboration with the Military Counterintelligence Department.
Investigators found that the head of the emergency surgery department sought financial reward from a sailor for preparing specific medical documentation. This documentation was to serve as grounds for the military medical commission's conclusion about limited fitness for military service, allowing the serviceman to continue serving in rear units, such as supply, logistics, communications, or security.
Initially, the medical worker demanded 10,000 dollars, but later reduced the amount to 2000. Police apprehended him immediately after he received the agreed sum, which was confiscated as evidence.
After gathering sufficient evidence, the police informed the suspect of charges under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning extortion and receiving illegal benefits by an official using their position. The suspect faces up to ten years in prison with a ban on holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities for up to three years, along with asset confiscation.
The court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention with the right to post bail amounting to 605,600 hryvnias.
The investigation is ongoing. The Odesa Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Defense in the Southern Region is overseeing the proceedings in this case.
