The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that Ukraine has successfully met all necessary conditions and deserves to begin the first phase of negotiations with the EU, currently blocked by Hungary.
She made this announcement at a press conference following the EU leaders' meeting in Brussels, as reported by "European Truth".
Von der Leyen emphasized that despite ongoing challenges, Ukraine continues to implement essential reforms.
"This is truly impressive. That is why we at the European Commission support the opening of the first phase of negotiations. Ukraine has done its part – now it's our turn. The accession process must be merit-based. And Ukraine deserves to move forward," said von der Leyen.
It is worth noting that at the Brussels summit on June 26, 26 EU leaders supported the opening of the first phase of negotiations with Ukraine, but Hungary obstructed this decision.
The government is still hopeful for the opening of the first negotiation phase following the EU summit.
Hungary continues to block Ukraine's progress towards the EU. This topic was discussed in the article "The European Union between Orban and Trump".
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Thursday that the results of the so-called "referendum" regarding Ukraine's EU membership give him more reason to speak out against Ukraine's membership.
