The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed that the results of the so-called "referendum" regarding Ukraine's EU membership, initiated by his government, effectively halted Ukraine's accession.

Orban stated that Hungary "understands the Ukrainians and acknowledges their heroic struggle".

"We also see that they need help, but we want to assist in a manner that does not jeopardize ourselves. Ukraine's EU membership would mean self-destruction. We would be immediately drawn into a war with Russia, bringing it onto EU territory, and thus to Hungary as well," said the Hungarian Prime Minister.

"Yesterday, with over two million votes on Voks2025, we stopped Ukraine's accession to the European Union," he added.

The head of the Hungarian government stated that Ukraine remains an "undefined entity" not due to its own fault.

"We don’t even know what Ukraine is today, where its borders are. This danger has existed in other former Soviet bloc countries. That’s why they were first admitted to NATO, as NATO could guarantee those borders. Only later did the EU accept other relevant countries," Orban continued, adding that Ukraine cannot join NATO, as that would mean an immediate war.
