Witnesses describe the scene as «like a glassy sea»: the waves move more slowly and crash against the ice. Local residents note that such phenomena do not occur every winter — this year, the cold is significantly harsher compared to previous seasons. Some residents mention that the first ice formations appeared early in the morning, and by evening, their area had noticeably expanded.
The city council reported that the cold weather will persist throughout the day. According to the official forecast for Monday, January 19, 2026, cloudy weather with some clearings is expected in Odesa, with no significant precipitation. The wind will be from the northeast at 9–14 m/s.
Morning temperatures will be around −8…−10 °C, and during the day, it will be approximately −2…−4 °C. The prolonged presence of sub-zero temperatures combined with strong winds creates conditions for ice formation in the coastal area of the Black Sea.
