A tragic event took place at Maternity Hospital No. 5 in Odesa where a newborn girl sadly passed away during childbirth.
A 25-year-old mother reported the incident to the police, as stated by the press service of the region's law enforcement.
Olena Boyko shared on her Instagram page that her pregnancy was without complications and all tests were normal. At 39 weeks, she was examined by doctor Kateryna Shapoval.
"The examination was extremely painful; two nurses held my legs, but the doctor couldn't perform it properly due to my severe pain," the woman recalls.
On the next morning, Olena experienced bleeding. According to her, the doctor claimed it was just "the waters breaking." Olena and her husband then went to the maternity hospital.
The contractions were very painful, and the woman requested a cesarean section, but she claims the doctor insisted, "Everyone is in pain; you will deliver naturally."
Suddenly, the baby's heartbeat began to fade during the contractions.
"I watched the screen and saw the heartbeat drop. It went from 150 to 120 to 90... When they called the head of the department (the heartbeat was already at 70), she examined me and said, 'She can't deliver naturally; we need to rush her for a cesarean,'" the woman recounts.
According to her, when the doctors delivered the baby, it was already not breathing. They attempted to save the infant, but it was in vain.
"Then my husband came in, started crying, and said that the baby had died," Olena Boyko remembers.
Later, she was informed that the bleeding had begun due to improper placement of blood vessels.
"The vessels that should have been inside the placenta were attached on top, which we were not informed about during any ultrasound, and my umbilical cord was only 21 centimeters long.
I physically could not deliver naturally, as when the baby descended, the umbilical cord tightened, and the vessels ruptured, causing internal bleeding," Olena explains.
As part of the investigation now underway, a series of expert examinations are planned. The police have classified the case under part 2 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - improper performance of professional duties by a medical worker. The penalty for this article can lead to a maximum of three years in prison.
