On August 23, Ukraine celebrates Flag Day.

This holiday was established to honor the long history of Ukrainian statehood and the symbols of independent Ukraine, aiming to foster respect for state symbols, according to the presidential decree of August 23, 2004. In 2009, amendments were made to this decree, and since then, an official flag-raising ceremony has been held annually on August 23 across the country.

The blue and yellow colors have a millennium-long history that dates back to Kievan Rus. In 1848, during the wave of revolutions in Europe, the blue-yellow flag became a symbol of the Ukrainian nation, first raised over the town hall in Lviv. The flag was officially recognized as the state symbol with the proclamation of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

In 1990, the national blue-yellow flag was officially raised at the town hall of Stryi on March 14, followed by its raising over the Kyiv city hall on July 24.

On August 23, 1991, the blue-yellow flag was brought into the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada, and on September 4, it was ceremoniously raised above the parliament building.

Following the onset of Russian aggression, the blue-yellow flag became a symbol of resistance and fight for freedom.
