In the heart of Odessa, Roman soldiers are set to showcase their camp for two days. Helmets, armor, weapons, and traditional costumes await visitors. This is a fantastic opportunity to dive into the atmosphere of ancient times and learn about the lives of Roman soldiers.
Journalists from Novyny.LIVE visited the site and noted the ongoing preparations.
An Open-Air Camp
The Romans are preparing outdoors, demonstrating coin minting and weaponry in the city center. Starting today, a real Roman camp has been established on Deribasivska, which will remain for two days. Currently, preparations are in full swing: tents are being set up, armor is being laid out, and costumes are being fitted. Tomorrow, everything will be in full operation for visitors.
"We had planned to open our Roman camp earlier, but the weather had other ideas. Tomorrow it will operate at full scale. We know that Romans were present in the Odessa region, by the Black Sea, so we are recreating their history here," said organizer Anatoliy Provchenko.
Authentic Costumes
The preparations are meticulous, from the locations to the costumes, from the fastenings to the threads that have historical significance. However, sometimes not everything can be perfectly restored. According to reconstruction participant Oleksandr, some items have "passports" that confirm their authenticity, including dating and archaeological sources.
"I am wearing lorica segmentata, the armor of a Roman soldier. This is a Gladius sword - short and effective for thrusting. The shield is a scutum. This is how the Roman army appeared during the time of Christ," Oleksandr explained.
On Saturday and most of Sunday, anyone interested can feel like part of the camp. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about armor and weapons and even experience being a legionnaire.
A Grand Reconstruction
The grand finale will be the large-scale Easter reenactment, which has been held for over 12 years. This year, it takes on special meaning - an invitation to reflect on events from two millennia ago. In the very heart of modern Odessa, the world of antiquity will come alive, where every movement, costume, or dialogue is an attempt to touch the flow of history.
"A grand Easter reenactment will take place here. Imagine, the entire Deribasivska will be filled with scenes. There will be six large stages where various performances will occur. It all begins with the grand entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem on a live donkey," shared organizer Anatoliy.
Historical reenactment is not just a spectacular event, but a true journey through time, allowing locals and guests of Odessa to not just observe but to personally touch the past, feel the rhythm of life of the Roman legion, and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of antiquity.
