A significant cultural event took place in Odesa — during a Christmas concert, a new interpretation of the legendary «Shchedryk» was presented, performed by local choral groups. The audience also had the chance to see a music video for the piece filmed during wartime.
«Shchedryk» is a globally recognized work by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, one of the most famous musical symbols of Ukraine. This time, the piece was performed collaboratively by Odesa's choral groups, musicians, and creative individuals.
The project idea originated in Odesa's music schools among the city's choral groups. The initiative included Odesa Professional Art College named after K.F. Dankevich, musicians, and creators, uniting to reinterpret this globally known work while showcasing the vibrant cultural life of modern Odesa.
The music video was shot under challenging conditions — during brief pauses between air raid alerts, symbolizing the resilience of the city and its cultural community.
Olia Lozova, Deputy Head of the Odesa City Military Administration, emphasized the significance of the project for the city:
«Such initiatives are not just about art. They reflect our identity, our capacity to resonate and create even in the toughest times. «Shchedryk» performed by Odesans is the city's voice that the world hears».
Project coordinator Olena Pavlova highlighted that the main goal was to preserve sincerity and raw emotion:
«We wanted Odesa to sound new and modern. In every note — Odesa, in every voice — our unity and belief in culture as a force that unites».
This project exemplifies how culture continues to thrive, evolve, and unite communities even during wartime, shaping Odesa's modern image on the cultural map of Ukraine and the world.
